Batticaloa

The east coast has many lagoons and Batticaloa is virtually surrounded by one of the largest. You must cross bridges and causeways to enter or leave the town.
Batticaloa has an interesting little Dutch fort, but is most famous for its 'singing fish'. Between April and September a distinct, deep note (described as the type of noise produced by rubbing a moistened finger around the rim of a wine glass) can be heard from the depths of the lagoon. It is strongest on full-moon nights. Theories of its cause range from shoals of catfish to bottom-lying shellfish.
